Practicum Program and Internships
Director, Dr. Deborah Carter Campbell

The Practicum Program is designed to provide students at the junior or senior level the opportunity to expand the knowledge they have gained in their academic studies of philosophical and religious concepts, values analysis, and critical thinking beyond the traditional classroom setting. Participants will be required to move beyond the role of 'student' and to become involved in activities that in some way demand philosophical practice; thus participants will gain an experience that will better prepare them for future educational and professional endeavors. Students may work with non-profit or for-profit organizations as long as some sort of critical reflection will be required of them. (Example settings include schools, hospitals, homeless shelters, museums, and law offices.) On a limited basis, students may also work in the department as interns by serving as instructional assistants or tutors.
To complete this requirement, students will register for PHIL 491 or RSTD 491: Practicum in Philosophy or Practicum in Religious Studies. The specific course requirements and number of credits earned for the practicum will be determined by the student, the student's advisor for the internship, and Dr. Campbell, based upon the following criteria:
- the number of hours committed to the internship (with approximately 16 hours the minimum requirement for one credit);
- the oral and written requirements of the course (for example, presentations to advisors, reflection journals, term papers, etc.);
- other requirements of the specific internship (for example, additional training hours, presentations to supervisors, etc.).
On campus, there exists two excellent resources for students preparing for an internship and, at this juncture, are the department's preferred methods of completing the practicum requirement.
These are:
- the Praxis Service-Learning Program, United Campus Ministries (757) 595-7604.
- the Internship/Co-op Program, coordinated by Joyce Armstrong, Experiential Learning, Office of Career and Counseling Services (757) 594-7047, jparmstr@cnu.edu.
More information is available through the above offices or by contacting Dr. Campbell.
Revised course description: Based upon description above.
